I really draw on the late 80”s and 90’s for inspiration. Femininity seemed attached to a cool factor that black women, in particular, had then. The nostalgia I feel when I look at old photos and magazines is women being women and not apologizing for it. Whether they were tomboy chic and speaking their minds like TLC or being unapologetically sexy like Naomi Campbell. The 90’s felt strong, and experimental. How short was too short how baggy was too baggy? Soooo many fashion extremes and cultural shifts in a short span of time really helped develop my outlook on life. I wanted to be like these women beautiful, successful and most importantly making a positive statement about women in general and black women in particular. We can do and be anything. And to paraphrase some wise words from a wise man, “Don’t waste your time trying to think outside of the box, there is no box.”

This winter has been a struggle, to say the least. I’ve had some personal setbacks and definitely struggled to keep up with this blog. The winter can be especially hard on my emotions and being cooped up in the house does nothing for my creativity. I think God may have heard my suffering because we were blessed enough to have a few days in February impersonate the very best parts of Spring. 70-degree weather and lots of sun! I took full advantage and linked up with my new friend Jonas to snap these. Not only was it great to get outdoors, it was even better to style some original pieces from Good Samaritans. I channeled all my “cool girl” vibes and got some pretty great shots which personify my current laid back and “comfort first” attitude towards clothing.

Reflections…

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with s3 presetPhoto Mar 24, 3 22 11 PMimg_5220post_tomarra1_060516_04post_tomarra3_060516_02img_5881_DSC1168img_6455img_6786post_tomarra1_092416_04img_7009_dsc0084-3

2016 has been trying to say the least. This new year I hope, as I do every year, to strive to be my very best self. To push forward my mind, push back my insecurities and become a better version of myself with every passing day. 2016 was the year I decided to take this blog more seriously and push my limits in every area of my life. Creating this online space has been one of the greatest challenges. Opening myself up to others in a way I never had before. Simply getting comfortable in front of the camera was something major. It was a striking blow to my natural shyness and a stepping stone along my journey of self-love and reflection. I hope you enjoy these throwbacks as much as I do and as you see how I have changed and progressed I hope that you will be able to reflect on your year with kindness and get excited for what’s to come!

P.S. Let this post also serve as a special thank you to my photographers Catharine and Bryce. These two have not only helped me become more comfortable with myself but have been nothing short of amazing in the work that they do. Their kindness, insight and willingness to listen have been a true blessing!

Baby Buns and Baby Hair…

img_7015img_7018img_6997img_7009img_7011img_7010img_7020

This was such a fun outfit to shoot! It was early October when Bryce and I shot this. I rocked my fave boyfriend jeans and a cute off the shoulder bodysuit I got for a massive steal! And no look I rock is complete without something vintage, which is my flannel that called out to me in a random day thrifting in Hollywood, CA almost 4 years ago. The choker is simply a textile I came across while shopping in fabric row. I added a pop of color with my bag. I don’t let the seasons changing affect my color choices! I pulled my natural hair up into three “baby buns” and kept my makeup very minimal. I’d been good to my skin the past few months and I wanted it to show! I just love clean natural makeup and easy fashion, especially in the fall months. Find all the details on this look below!
