A Hype Bae Birthday…..

2017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_0122017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_0642017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_0242017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_0712017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_0162017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_0352017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_0762017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_0662017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_1012017-02-16_photoshoot_marra_119It’s my birthday! I now declare myself twenty-SEXY! Lol the age 26 is here. I’m officially closer to 30 than 20 and that’s a scary thing! But what I have realized in these 26 years of life is that becoming who you are takes a lifetime and being comfortable in my own skin is still something I work on every day. I find it hard to believe that there is some magical age when I will feel like I’ve got it all together. I never will. Life actually has no finish lines, just many many starts in different arenas and fields with new crowds of loving friends and family to push you along. There will be pain and sometimes lots of it and that’s ok. There will be joy and thankfully much more laughter than hurt. Holding onto the glimmer of each day’s silver lining has pushed me forward to this point despite the many times I felt I failed. I hope this birthday will be the beginning of an uplifting chapter in my life where discovering who I am and who I hope to be are top priorities. I feel like my evolving style in clothing(tomboy chic is here to stay), music(smooth joints only)and makeup(much less is now much more) reflect my coming of age and the discovery that comfort is the lock and discomfort the key. I will continue to push the limits of my comfort and work to see my visions come to life.  And while I may not be where I want to be I am much much further than where I came from and that is less a birthday gift and more a birthday blessing.

Progression…

post_tomarra3_112716_02post_tomarra3_112716_06post_tomarra3_112716_05post_tomarra3_112716_03post_tomarra3_112716_04post_tomarra3_112716_01

This shoot was FREEZING! Do not let my smize fool you, the wind blew so hard I ripped my falsies off after the first few shots LOL. But as usual I had a lot of fun with my photographer Bryce! We found some cool wall art in West Philly near the El and let that be our backdrop. This shoot was especially exciting because I was able to wear one of my custom pieces. The jean jacket I have on is the first piece created for Good Samaritans, a clothing collective started by myself and my insanely creative partner in love and life. Our mutual passion for vintage fashion and custom clothing led us to create our own brand. Good Samaritan Clothing Collective is a lifestyle brand that adds a personal touch to new and vintage clothing. All pieces are specially sourced, hand crafted, and one of a kind. Starting this brand was a major progression for me. It takes all that I am to put my creative efforts out into the world. I think we all get a little afraid to share our ideas with others but the world would be far less cool if we did not!

How have you progressed in life so far? Any projects you’re afraid to start?

The Vibes are Always VINTAGE….

_dsc0214-1_dsc0084-3_dsc0185-2img_6974_dsc0166-2

Took these shots last month with Catherine. It was such a beautiful day! Using Olde City as our backdrop was perfect. I loved all the warm fall colors and the casual energy of the day. This look would have been vintage head to toe sans my beautiful Italian leather sneakers. I had never had a pair of slip on sneaks with a pointed toe. That little detail made them a must for my closet!

This shoot was especially fun because I’ve been trying out new hairstyles and loving the diversity of my hair! My baby buns are life! Lol And despite the unexpected cold weather this day I clung to my vintage shorts and jean jacket with cutouts. I live in vintage denim, as I’m sure you can tell by my previous posts! This was the finale for my legs, which will be wrapped away until Summer and I meet again.

For my makeup I kept it simple and focused on my favorite thing, skin and lashes. I almost can’t believe I used to go without them. Lashes complete any and every look. I’ve even worn lashes with no makeup at all! I stuck to my tried and true foundation Black Opal “True Colors”. I love the clean matte finish it gives my skin.

I’m hoping to share more of my skin and beauty routines with you soon!

Saying Goodbye to Summer…

img_6455img_6474img_6479img_6481img_6482

With Labor Day past us Summer feels officially over. Yet, Mother Nature is taking her time. The 80 degree weather continues and I can savor short dresses and sandals for a while longer. This is something I would usually love but, for whatever reason,  I am ready for a night chill and leaves to turn color. I want hot cider and cinnamon. I am longing for jackets and warm sweaters. But as this shoot shows the heat still called for a less is more style. The off the shoulder dress, (which after some thought I have decided is a tunic lol) was a great find in one of my favorite boutique stores on South St. I paired it with my favorite gladiator style sandals and a vintage woven clutch. I’ve also been rocking my natural hair and loving it. The unrelenting summer heat won’t really allow for any other style, really. For beauty I kept it simple, as usual, and focused on making sure my skin looked simply clear and even. How are you dealing with the end of summer?? Are you ready for the Fall ahead of us?

Dog Days and Denim…

post_tomarra3_060516_04post_tomarra3_060516_03post_tomarra3_060516_07post_tomarra3_060516_08post_tomarra3_060516_01post_tomarra3_060516_02

The Dog Days of Summer
noun; the hottest period of the year (reckoned in antiquity from the heliacal rising of Sirius, the Dog Star).

I know I’ve said it a million times and you have too, IT”S HOT! Hotter than ever it seems.Every morning I abandon the chill of my conveniently air conditioned 3rd floor walk up and enter what seems to be Mother Nature’s latest interpretation of “hell on earth”. I am immediately caught in the rapture of thick muggy air and blinding sunlight. Because of this, I’ve nearly abandoned makeup. I’ve mostly restricted myself to light natural looks and only on special occasions, like this photoshoot. Yet what I have stubbornly held onto are my jeans. My vintage destroyed denim is a trademark of mine and the heat will not stop my style! I’ve been pairing them with light tanks like this one for balance. I wear an outfit defiantly similar to this one at least twice a week. Tanks and jeans have never forsaken me and I intend on returning the favor. And sure, I toss on some shorts here and there but the jeans are always on my mind and often what I try on before the heat bullies me into bare skin.

What style staple are you sacrificing in this summer’s heat? What are you holding onto?

Something for Summer…

_DSC0773edit_DSC1103_DSC1123_DSC0827_DSC1168

Let’s talk hair! This is the very first post I am making with my hair in it! Lol and surprisingly enough my hair was straight. I rarely straighten my hair these days so it was really fun! I spent the whole time feeling very old hollywood and glamorous. My hair stylist gave me an amazing hair cut that has begun to grow into something very Marilyn-esque and I love it!

This Summer I’m staying true to myself in cut off shorts and loose tops. I hate to put too much thought or effort into outfits in the warmer months. It’s such a great opportunity to be both creative and comfortable. I make all my own shorts and jeans out of vintage finds and almost always go for baggy vs. tight fitting.

My makeup was easy breezy this day as well. I did my normal everyday look and pumped it up with a red lip and bold lashes!

Something Old, Something New

This month I had the pleasure of working with photographer Bryce Lennon and being featured on his blog UnregisteredStyle. Although spring is usually about fresh new things, I’ve caught the vintage bug as of late. Mixing old and new is the cornerstone of my personal style and I thought this look was perfect representation of that. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, no store is off limits. I rummage thrift stores with the same intensity as the Bloomingdales sales rack. Fashion is about creation and here I wanted to create elevated comfort.

When choosing a beauty look I wanted to be bold with my lip but keep smooth, simple skin with very minimal contour. I think I achieved that with the dark wine colored lip which compliments the overall color scheme of the outfit. I achieved the color by mixing a deep purple liner and dark brown lipstick.

Let me know what you think of my look in the comments section!

For Fools in April…

Today, when Social Media is often at the center of our day to day activities, staying positive about who we are and what we have going on for ourselves becomes increasingly difficult. Days are easily spent leering through iPhone looking glasses, force feeding reality, and getting high on fantasy. Screenshots become adoration. Every ‘like’ says, “me too” or “I wish me too”…. I think it’s important to take a break from comparison and commit to living life on your own terms and in your own true color.

Shooting, this day in particular, I felt really good. The weather had broken and it was warm, too warm to keep my jacket on and the sun seemed to come down to kiss me in particular….It was AMAZING, like the Universe said, “I know you need this.” All the colors of the wall bled into me and suddenly the gray was gone. The stress I felt from trying to be anyone but myself disappeared. I was living in a rainbow of love and life. My love and my life. It was a long time coming and well deserved….

The New Year is normally a time for resolutions and reflection. We either look teary eyed into our past, combing through mistakes and failures or running toward a bright future we’ve mapped out and hope to remember the goals we set now in the middle of July. As we open up the first chapter of 2016 I feel like a blank canvas. I’ve gone through a slow rebirth process. Much less exciting than what is often portrayed in the spiritual books I read. God did not show me some miraculous all covering light that turned my path 180 and suddenly and completely purified my heart. What has taken place is a slow awakening. I’ve learned in 2015 the greatest lesson God has given me yet, it’s ok to change your mind. It’s ok to try a million different things and still not find your passion. It’s ok to start from scratch. I hope we can all go into this new year just as happy to keep building on strong foundations as you may be in destroying the past and starting anew. Trust me, either way, your life has the infinite possibility for happiness and success. Just be patient.

Shoot Location: Race Street Pier

The openness and expanse of water was the perfect backdrop for new beginnings. I felt free and excited for what is to come!
